Western Joiners was founded by Mr Kretschmer, who emigrated from West Germany in 1951. From 1951 to 1957 Mr Kretschmer worked as foreman at Protea Timber, where after he started his own joinery and woodworking business called Westelike Skrynwerker (Western Joiners).
The company has three directors, namely Philip Dempers, Johann Dempers and Philip’s daughter, Thea Blaauw. Isick Louw is the production manager.
The beginnings were humble with a staff of four workers. Mr Kretschmer operated out of the Western Wools building, where they did general joinery work and cupboards for the provincial administration, schools and hospitals.
By 1966 the business was growing rapidly and a bigger premises was needed. The business moved to the piano factory. Very soon this premises was outgrown and a decision was made to build a new premises in Versailles Street, Wellington.
On the 1st of July 1983, Johann and Philip Dempers bought the company and they then moved to the premises of Paarlse Meubelmakers in Ambachtsvallei Street, Huguenot, Paarl. This is still the current premises.
Johann and Philip Dempers kept the trading name and today Western Joiners (Westelike Skrynwerker) is well known throughout the Western Cape for its excellent quality craftsmanship, joinery, woodworking and the production of doors, windows and gates.
